In December of 2011, I attended the open house of a new horse rescue in Evansville Indiana. It's name is A Hoof and a Prayer, located at 19111 Old State Road, Evansville Indiana, 47725. Their FaceBook page is located at:

https://www.facebook.com/ahoofandaprayer

I became  regular volunteer at this wonderful place, making friends and getting to know the horses there.  In this blog, I intend to  help get the word out for what we need and the horses that are in search of homes.

Right now, A Hoof and a Prayer needs money. We are in the midst of a drought, and crippling heat.  If you can, please make a donation to help these horses. We have a PayPal account:

Or feel free to send a check or money order by mail. Here is info for sponsorships copied from the FaceBook page:

Sponsoring!

by A Hoof and A Prayer Horse Rescue on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at 10:56pm ·
A Hoof and A Prayer Horse Rescue does not receive any state or government funding. We survive solely on support from the community, both financially and otherwise. Any kind of donation is always appreciated, and nothing is ever too small. That being said, we have had several inquiries about financially sponsoring care for your favorite horse, and now we are able to offer that opportunity!
Here are your options!

Sponsor a horse for 1 month - Cost: $100.00
What they get: Sponsoring a horse for a month covers the cost of their grain/alfalfa, hay, water, and sawdust for 30 days.
What you get: You can choose whichever horse you would like to sponsor. Your name will go underneath the horse's picture on our website/facebook for as long as you are their sponsor, to let people know what a difference you've made in their life!

Sponsor a farrier visit for a horse - Cost: $35 per visit, per horse.
What they get: Sponsoring farrier care for a horse covers the cost of getting their hooves trimmed, which helps keeps them sound and comfortable. Horses need a trim about every 6-8 weeks.
What you get: You can choose whichever horse you would like to sponsor. Your name will go underneath the horse's picture on our website/facebook as an official hoof sponsor!

Sponsor teeth floating for a horse - Cost: $100
What they get: Sponsoring a teeth floating session ensures that your horsey pal can comfortably do what he loves most--eat! Horses need their teeth floated about once a year to ensure they don't get any sharp edges, abcesses, or sore spots in their mouths, preventing them from eating, or comfortably wearing a bit.
What you get: You can choose whichever horse you would like to sponsor. Your name will go underneath the horse's picture on our website/facebook as an official dental sponsor!

Sponsor a load of sawdust - Cost: $340
What they get: Our sawdust is very high quality, and makes a soft cushiony floor for the horses' stalls. Those of you who have been out to volunteer know that we heavily regulate how much sawdust we use. That's because one load of sawdust, at $340 a load, usually only lasts us a little over a month!
What you get: We will put your name on our website/facebook as a sawdust sponsor for the month, and sing your praises to all the horses as they nap in their freshly clean sawdusted stalls, all thanks to you!

Sponsor a load of water - Cost: $100
What they get: Those of you who have been to the barn know that the only thing we value more than horses and volunteers is water. We can't connect to city water, and have to have trucks bring water to put in our well. It costs $100 per load, which at the moment is lasting us around 5 days. With summer heat still to come, horses are drinking more, and water is disappearing faster! Sponsoring a load of water (or two!) is one of the best ways to make a difference, and keep all the horses healthy, happy, and hydrated!
What you get: We will put your name on our website/facebook as an official water sponsor, and tell all the horses about how wonderful you are, as they gather around the troughs for a nice refreshing drink of clean water that you provided!

Sponsor grain for a month - Cost: $740
What they get: If you want to instantly make 50 new best friends, pull the grain wagon around the barn at dinner time. Our horses LOVE their grain, as they should! We get a custom mix of grain from Holland Feeds so that we're sure our horses stay on a consistant diet. It's packed with all the vitamins and minerals that our guys need, and they go through it in no time!
What you get: We will put your name on our website/facebook as an official grain sponsor. You will also get the undying gratitude of all the horses as they eagarly inhale the food you so generously provided for them.

Sponsor wormer for one horse - Cost $15.00
What they get: Just like dogs and cats, horses need to be protected from worms as well. $15 covers the cost of one tube of wormer for one horse. They need to be wormed about every three months.
What you get: You can choose which horse's wormer you would like to sponsor. We will put your name under their picture as the wormer sponsor for that cycle, and the horse you choose will appreciate not having to spend valuable grazing time finding somewhere to do the itchybutt dance. (Note: you can also sponsor wormer for all the horses! Call us to find out how many we currently have to find out the cost!)

Sponsor vaccinations for one horse - Cost $87.00
What they get: Our horses are vaccinated twice a year against many common horse diseases. One set of vaccines costs us $87, but can save the life of your favorite horse.
What you get: You can choose which horse's vaccines you would like to sponsor, and we will put your name under their picture on our website/facebook as their vaccination sponsor. Your sponsored horse may not appreciate you all that much when she actually gets the vaccines, but she'll thank you when she's feeling healthy and strong enough to eat all the treats you bring her for years to come!

Sponsor a gelding surgery - Cost: $150
What they get: Stallions can be very dangerous at a rescue for several reasons, perhaps the most important reason is that we're trying to save the horses we have, not make more of them. Any stallion that comes into the barn is separated from the herd until they can be gelded. It makes them sad and lonely, especially when one of our pretty little mares walks by. Help them think about something else by contributing to our gelding fund!
What you get: Your name will be put under the picture of whichever gelding's surgery you helped pay for, and your new, calmer, horsey friend will be able to take his mind off mares long enough to appreciate all the nice things in life... like food.

Sponsor our electric bill - Cost $250/month
What they get: Sure, our horses don't watch that much tv or spend long hours drying their manes in the bathroom, but they do appreciate having a light on when we're working into the night, or the relief of a fan (or 6) on a hot July day, and they also appreciate how much less grumpy we are when we can pump water into their buckets from inside the barn, rather than haul it up from the well by hand, so you might say they have adapted well to the modern applications of electricity.
What you get: We will put your name on our website/facebook letting everyone know who's shedding some light on our happy little barn for the month!

Sponsor the rescue - Cost $3,000/month
What we get: After sitting down and figuring up the cost of everything that happens in a month, including everything listed above, plus the average vet bills and various other expenses that come up, we figured out that it costs about $3000 to keep our doors open and our horses cared for each month.
What you get: Our literal undying gratitude, as well as that of the horses, and everyone who's lives this rescue has touched. If money were no object, there would be no limit as to the amazing things we could do. Unfortunately, it is an object, and something that threatens the existence of most non-profit groups. This may not be a feasible amount for you to do on your own, but perhaps your business, church, or organization would like to sponsor the barn for a month. It never hurts to ask!

Sponsoring is easy! There are a ton of ways to do it!

1. Stop by the barn! We have a donation box by the volunteer sign-in sheet! Just make sure to let us know what the sponsorship is for, and which horse if applicable!(checks can be made payable to A Hoof and A Prayer Horse Rescue)

2. Mail it to us!
